Oklahoma City is set to welcome student-athletes and rowing fans for the 2025 Youth Rowing League Spring Championships, hosted by RIVERSPORT, on Saturday, May 10, from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. The event will take place in the heart of the Boathouse District, with races unfolding under the lights on the Oklahoma River.
A Showcase of Local Talent
The Spring Championships mark the culmination of a 12-week season, during which middle and high school teams from across the Oklahoma City metro area have trained one to two days each week to prepare for this spirited competition. The event is expected to draw teams from a diverse group of schools, including ASTEC, Cristo Rey, Emerson, FD Moon, John Rex, Mustang, Southeast, and others.
The league is inclusive, welcoming any Oklahoma City metro area school to participate. Its mission is to introduce students to the sport of rowing, regardless of prior experience, by providing coaching, equipment, and program coordination through RIVERSPORT. Notably, Title 1 schools can join at no cost, ensuring broader access to the sport for students from underserved communities.
Racing Under the Lights
One of the unique features of the Youth Rowing League Championships is the nighttime racing experience. The Oklahoma River, equipped with stadium lighting along a 500-meter stretch, provides a dramatic setting for the event, allowing family, friends, and the public to cheer on the athletes as they race into the evening. The Boathouse District’s modern facilities, including the iconic Devon Boathouse, further elevate the championship atmosphere.
A Community Event – Free and Open to the Public
The championships are free and open to all, with organizers encouraging the community to come out and support these young rowers as they compete for school pride and personal achievement. Spectators can expect an engaging experience, with the finish line located near the Finish Line Tower, offering excellent views of the action.
More Than Just a Race
Beyond the excitement of competition, the Youth Rowing League serves as a pathway for youth development and inclusion in Oklahoma City. RIVERSPORT is dedicated to building a vibrant outdoor community and developing Olympic hopefuls in rowing and paddlesports. Its outreach ensures that students from all backgrounds have opportunities to participate in outdoor sports, fostering teamwork, discipline, and healthy lifestyles.
